Rabat – Permanent Representative of Morocco to the United Nations Ambassador Omar Hilale, has been appointed as co-chair of the new “Coalition on Science, Technology, and Innovation for Africa” (STI).
The coalition was launched on Tuesday in New York as part of Africa Day, held on the sidelines of the United Nations Economic and Social Council’s (ECOSOC) Forum.
The appointment of a Moroccan diplomat at the head of this initiative has come as a reaffirmation of the leading role the kingdom plays in Africa in several areas, under the leadership and African vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI.
The coalition is an initiative that aims to create a pathway for African states to develop, deploy, and expand the use of STI in the broader context of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the UN Agenda 2030 and the African Union Agenda 2063.
This Coalition intends to leverage the potential of African innovators, including youth and the diaspora, and expand financial and educational opportunities to find viable and scalable STI solutions for the states of the continent.
It also aims to take advantage of the continental free trade area to strengthen investment in research and development, and promote infrastructure dedicated to STI.
In a report, German outlet Tagesschau put forward Morocco’s ambitious green energy project in green hydrogen, which aims to increase the share of renewable energy in its electricity consumption to 52% by 2030, and 80% by 2050.
The report highlights that the country is set to supply Germany with green hydrogen in the future, as a “pioneer of Africa in green energy.”
