Marrakech Witnesses Record-Breaking 63% Surge in Tourist Arrivals in May

Rabat – Morocco’s red city Marrakech witnessed a remarkable 63% increase in tourist arrivals during May compared to the same period in 2019, according to new data by Marrakech’s Regional Tourism Delegation.

The surge in tourist arrivals can be attributed to the strong performance of both domestic and international tourism.

Domestic tourism recorded a staggering 167% increase while tourist coming from Italy increased by 23%. Arrivals from the UK increased by 56%, while those from France increased by 39%.

Additionally, visitors from Spain increased by 41%, while those coming from Belgium increased by 39%.

Overnight stays also followed an upward trajectory, recording a 51% increase compared to the same period in 2019.

This positive trend was also reflected in room occupancy rates, which improved by 23 points, reaching an impressive 72% during the month of May.

The growth in tourist numbers has been consistent throughout the year, with Marrakech witnessing an 11% increase in overnight stays and a 12% rise in arrivals from January to May 2023 compared to the same period in 2019.

The data indicates that tourism activity in the city has surpassed that of 2019, the benchmark year.

The Regional Tourism Delegation expressed optimism for the year 2023, stating that the tourism sector in Marrakech is showing signs of recovery and returning to a path of growth.

The positive sentiment aligns with the increased air traffic witnessed at Marrakech Menara International Airport during May, which recorded a 27% increase in commercial passenger traffic volume compared to May 2019.

In addition to the surge in tourist arrivals, there has also been a remarkable increase in tourism investment in Marrakech.

During the first five months of the current year, 159 tourist accommodation projects were authorized, boasting a total bed capacity of 7,850 and an investment of MAD 538 million.

These projects are expected to create over 5,000 direct jobs, signaling confidence in the sustainability and potential of Marrakech as a thriving tourism destination.

During the same period, the city’s hotel capacity was increased with the addition of 25 new lodging establishments.

The travel agency sector also experienced growth, witnessing the establishment of 15 new agencies.
