Rabat – Morocco was unanimously elected as a Vice President of the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly by all 193 member states on Thursday, June 1.

Represented by its Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Omar Hilale, Morocco will assume this crucial position on behalf of the African continent from September 2023 to September 2024.

The United Nations announced the appointment of Morocco alongside a diverse group of nations, including Bolivia, Congo, Estonia, Gambia, Iceland, Iran, Malaysia, the Netherlands, Senegal, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Suriname, Uganda, Uzbekistan, and Zambia.

These newly elected Vice Presidents will join the five permanent members of the Security Council, namely China, France, the Russian Federation, the United Kingdom, and the United States, who serve as Assembly Vice Presidents on an annual basis.

Morocco’s election to this esteemed role reflects the Kingdom’s unwavering commitment to the principles and goals of the United Nations.

Known for its active participation in peacekeeping missions and peacebuilding efforts, Morocco has also demonstrated its dedication to combating terrorism and violent extremism.

The North African country ranked first as a global contributor to international peace and security in a 2022 study published in the Diplomatic Courier’s Good Country Index (GCI).

As Vice President of the General Assembly, Morocco will actively engage in the upcoming high-level week of the 78th session, during which several significant events will take place within the multilateral organization.

One of the notable events is the High-Level Meeting (HLM) on Pandemic Prevention, Preparedness, and Response (Pandemic PPR), scheduled for September 20. Hilale will play a crucial role in co-facilitating the political declaration to be adopted on this occasion by the heads of state and governments.

Other high-level meetings are scheduled for the United Nations General Assembly high-level week, including the 2023 SDG Summit, which will be held on September 18-19, bringing together heads of state and government to monitor and review the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Morocco’s election as Vice President of the UN General Assembly underscores its active role in the international community and its commitment to promoting peace, development, and human rights. As the Kingdom assumes this influential position, it will undoubtedly contribute to shaping global agendas and fostering multilateral cooperation for the benefit of all nations.
