Rabat – UEFA announced on Thursday that West Ham United’s Nayef Aguerd has been named in the 2022-23 Europa Conference League Team of the season, for his strong performances at the backline throughout the tournament.
UEFA’s Technical Observer panel named the team of the season, mainly made up of players from England’s West Ham and Italy’s Fiorentina, the two teams that reached the final.
West Ham won the final on Wednesday by beating Fiorentina 2-1 in Prague at the Eden Arena Stadium.
Aguerd has been vital in his team’s title run this season, in turn raising his value in the eyes of several top European clubs who may be looking for defensive reinforcements.
Sports website Goal recently reported that the Atlas Lion is a potential target for Liverpool, as the Reds’ coach Jurgen Klopp looks to strengthen his defense following a disappointing season.
Aguerd would reportedly replace Joe Gomez or Joel Matip, who have struggled with injuries and fitness for the past two seasons.
West Ham could seek to capitalize on the interest and demand a high fee for the Moroccan, who signed a five year deal with the London club when he joined last year.
His performances with the national team, where he was vital to their miracle run to the semi-finals in the 2022 World Cup, should also increase interest from top European clubs.
The team also included West Ham’s Alphonse Areola as a goalkeeper, and FC Basel’s Dan Ndoye in the backline along with Aguerd and Fiorentina’s Nikola Milenkovic and Cristiano Biraghi.
Basel’s Andy Diouf was named in the midfield alongside West Ham players Lucas Paqueta and Declan Rice.
Fiorentina’s Nicolas Gonzalez, as well as West Ham’s Michail Antonio and Jarrod Bowen were named the tournament’s best forwards.
