Rabat – Moroccan international footballer Nayef Aguerd is reportedly very close to joining Liverpool, with a report by the sports website Goal suggesting that the Moroccan player is “very appreciated” by the Liverpool coaching staff.
The English club, which currently sits in fifth place in the Premier League and wants to regain their former glorious level, could recruit the Moroccan center-back player this summer to reinforce and revitalize their backline.
With all of Virgil Van Dijk, Joe Gomez, and Joel Matip struggling with injuries in the past two seasons, Liverpool sees Aguerd as a fitting replacement to invigorate their defense.
Aguerd joined the English club West Ham last summer, signing a five-year contract. Since his return from an ankle ailment, which had him miss the start of the season, the Moroccan player has been impressive in the West Ham backline.
The Moroccan defender has even scored 2 goals in 17 Premier League appearances this season.
While West Ham has had an underwhelming campaign in the Premier League, currently standing 14th in the league table, the East London club has fared much better on the continental stage. West Ham will lock horns with Italy’s Fiorentina in the final of the Europa League Conference on June 7 in Prague.
Liverpool is reportedly not the only Premier League club looking to sign Aguerd, with the sports news page Jeunes Footeux recently reporting that Tottenham Hotspur is also interested in securing a deal with the highly regarded Moroccan defender.
While West Ham paid last summer £30 million to sign Aguerd from the French Ligue 1 club Rennes, Jeunes reported that the East London club could ask for up to £53 million for the Moroccan defender.
