Rabat – Eid Al Adha, an Islamic religious holiday known in English as the sacrifice feast, is expected to take place on Thursday, June 29 in Morocco, Moroccan astronomer Hicham Aissaoui said.
The astronomer’s calculations predict the first day of Dhul-Hijjah, the twelfth and final month in the Islamic Hijri calendar, to be on June 20.
Dhu al-Hijja is the month in which the pilgrimage to Mecca (Hajj) takes place. The tenth day of the month also marks Eid Al Adha, also known as Eid el-Kebir in Morocco.
The ritual commemorates Abraham’s sacrifice. According to the Qur’an, Allah had subjected Abraham to a severe test of his fidelity and piety, asking him to sacrifice his son Ismael, which Abraham accepted.
While Abraham was leading his son to his fate, Allah sent him a sheep to replace Ishmael on the sacrificial place.
Muslims across the world use livestock to commemorate Eid Al Adha rituals annually on the tenth day of the month of Dhul- Hijjah.
Earlier this month, Minister of Agriculture Mohamed Sadiki pledged government measures to ensure the quality of livestock tagged for the feast.
The minister said that supply slightly exceeds the demand estimated at 5.6 million heads of livestock.
“The sanitary condition of the livestock is considered to be good,” he said.
The remarks come amid concerns from citizens who took to social networks to complain about the skyrocketing prices of sheep and livestock mobilized for Eid Al Adha.
Some complained that prices of the livestock exceed their purchasing power, which is already affected due to ongoing inflation and skyrocketing prices of other food products.
