Rabat – The police in Tangier successfully foiled an international drug trafficking scheme, confiscating a staggering 890 kilograms of Chira, also known as cannabis resin, as reported today by the National Company of Radio and Television (SNRT).

This latest seizure follows the arrest made by Tangier-Med police officers last Saturday, when they apprehended a Spanish national attempting to smuggle 1,050 kilograms of Chira.

The authorities identified the precise locations where the drugs were being packaged and stored, precisely within a house and two garages situated in the rural area of “Khemis Anjra” in the Tanger-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region of Morocco.

During the subsequent searches, law enforcement discovered 20 packets of Chira, weighing a total of 890 kilograms. Additionally, they seized significant logistical resources, including eight cars, a quad bike, a jet ski, five hunting cartridges, and a set of falsified car registration plates.

The Tangier police are continuing their investigations and inquiries under the guidance of the public prosecutor’s office, with the aim of uncovering any potential links to this criminal activity at both the national and international levels and apprehending any accomplices involved in these illicit acts.

This operation forms part of Morocco’s ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking. Earlier this month, on June 13, Moroccan police intercepted over 3.5 tons of cannabis near Kenitra, off the coast of Mehdia. The Royal Navy unit successfully pursued the drug traffickers, who were attempting to escape in a high-speed boat.

In 2022, joint operations conducted by the police and the General Directorate for Territorial Surveillance (DGST), nearly 93,000 drug-related cases were processed, leading to the arrest of over 120,000 individuals suspected of involvement in such activities.

During the same year, the authorities seized a total of 98,500 tonnes of cannabis, marking a 49% decrease compared to the previous year. In addition to cannabis, Moroccan law enforcement also seized 190 kilograms of cocaine and 2.82 kilograms of heroin.
