Rabat – The highly controversial incident where Al Ahly player Hussein El-Shahat slapped and insulted Pyramids FC’s Moroccan player Mohamed Chibi last week continues to be the center of a heated debate.
Kuwaiti lawyer Saoud Alshohomi took a stand and openly criticized Egyptian media’s response to the situation, accusing them of downplaying the severity of the incident and undermining the importance of addressing violence in sports.
The lawyer particularly criticized the remarks of football pundit Ahmed Shobeir, who also played as a goalkeeper for Al Ahly and Egypt’s national team.
Shobeir had been among those attempting to diminish the seriousness of the incident, which Alshohomi found particularly troubling, considering his stature in the Egyptian sports community.
The Egyptian anchor said when commenting on the incident, “A player made a mistake, the league penalized him, the punishment didn’t sit well with the club that was affected, so they filed a complaint to the appeals committee.”
“As a result, Al-Ahly imposed a hefty fine of half a million Egyptian pounds on the player. The matter is now completely settled; all the commotion, fuss, and uproar surrounding it are meaningless and baseless,” he added.

The lawyer expressed astonishment by Shobeir’s statement, questioning his role as a sports figure and a media personality to uphold the values of respect and fair play.
“Being a sports figure, a sports critic, a media personality, and appearing on the official television channel to comment on sports, then issuing a statement saying that you do not understand the commotion and exaggeration around the incident of Hussein El-Shahat hitting Mohamed Chibi?” the lawyer said with astonishment on a video he published to social media.

He added, “Come on! He slapped him and openly insulted him in broad daylight in front of everyone.”
Alshohomi expressed his strong disapproval of such conduct in sports, stressing that if he were in Egypt, he would be “honored” to represent Mohamed Chibi and pursue both criminal and civil charges against Hussein El-Shahat and Al Ahly Club.
He highlighted the importance of addressing such incidents seriously to maintain the integrity and sportsmanship of the game.
In addition, he warned that brushing the incident aside normalizes violence on the field and sends a message that violent conduct during sporting events is tolerable and acceptable.
“Because if this behavior is accepted and justified, it would mean that every player in any club can come out right after a match, grab another player, slap him, and insult him, and everything would be good .. why are you making a big deal out of it?” he added.
Alshohomi also raised questions about the implementation of stricter disciplinary measures in football to deter violent behavior on the pitch and ensure that the players involved face appropriate consequences for their actions.
