Rabat – A treasure hunt in the heart of Marrakech’s historic medina took a devastating turn on Tuesday when a group of treasure seekers found themselves trapped inside a makeshift tunnel they had dug.

According to a news report from Moroccan media Le360, the leader of the treasure seekers died of suffocation despite rescue efforts.

The incident took place in the Al-Qanaria neighborhood of Marrakech’s historic medina. The group, looking to uncover hidden treasures, had spent three weeks digging a tunnel within a house located in Darb Al-Qanaria Al-Jadid.

As the digging operations progressed, tragedy struck when the leader, known as “Fqih” suffocated inside the narrow tunnel. The news of the incident quickly spread, prompting authorities to launch a swift and dramatic rescue operation.

Video footage shared online captured the moments as local authorities and civil protection services rushed to save the trapped treasure hunters.

The team managed to rescue two individuals from the tunnel, narrowly averting further casualties.

News outlet Le360 report indicates that the tunnel is 46 meters long and 5 meters deep and was built without proper authorization.

In response to the incident, security forces apprehended four individuals associated with the treasure hunt.

The homeowner of the property where the tunnel was dug remains unknown. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the construction of the hazardous tunnel.
