Rabat – A bus accident in Taza, a city in northern Morocco, resulted in 11 deaths, and 43 injuries, according to a report from Morocco’s Press Agency (MAP).
While the report did not specify the exact timing of the accident, it explains that the accident happened six kilometers off of Taza.
In the aftermath of the accident, Morocco’s Royal Gendarmerie opened an official investigation under the supervision of the public prosecutor to determine the exact circumstances of the accident.
Meanwhile, the injured were transferred to the emergency room of the provincial hospital of Taza to receive medical attention.
Road accidents in Morocco pose a major health risk to its citizens. The latest data from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) indicates that the death toll from road accidents in Morocco continued to climb over the past decade, only dipping slightly in 2020 on the backdrop of COVID-imposed travel restrictions.
The North African country recorded 3,005 deaths from road accidents in 2020. Other estimates suggest that road accidents account for nearly 3% of total deaths in the country.
Morocco ranked third in the number of road fatalities out of 37 countries, following the United States and China, according to an OECD database.
