Rabat – Amid growing international concerns, reports suggest that North Korea could be on the verge of conducting another nuclear test, raising fears that its underground test site might not contain all the radiation. The country had previously destroyed its Punggye-ri site in 2018 as part of a diplomatic charm offensive after conducting six nuclear weapons tests there.
However, satellite images reveal that parts of the blast tunnels were left intact, leading experts to believe that the secretive nation may have restored one of these tunnels in preparation for a new detonation.
North Korea expert Jacob Bogle, who meticulously analysed satellite photos of the country, stated that it is ready for another explosion once Kim Jong-un issues the orders. Although no immediate indications of an imminent test have been observed, concerns persist about the potential consequences for the region and beyond.
Dr Heinonen, a fellow at the Stimson Center think tank, has also warned about the potential risk of radiation contamination. “If a nuclear test were to occur, radiation from the blast could seep into the water supply through cracks in the ground,” he said. “The implications of such an event could be catastrophic, not only for North Korea but also for neighbouring countries.”

The current situation has raised alarm bells among international experts and leaders who have long urged North Korea to abandon its nuclear ambitions. The international community has repeatedly warned on the tests conducted with concerns about the structural integrity of the site.
