New data shows that Morocco’s watermelon sales to the European market have overtaken Spain in the month of April.

The North African country’s watermelon sales to the EU market reached 9.14 million kilograms of watermelon, surpassing Spain’s sale by 248.8% in terms of volume

Agriculture-focused website FreshPlaza quoted new data compiled by Hortoinfo, stressing that Spain sold only 2.62 million kilograms of watermelon during the same period to the EU.
This is regardless of prices of the product, which were higher in Morocco compared to Spanish watermelon.

According to the same data,  Spain sold its watermelon at an average price of € 1.05 per kilogram compared to an average price of € 1.23 per kilogram for Moroccan watermelon.

Through watermelon sales, Morocco made a total revenue of  €11.29 million. Spain’s watermelon revenues, however, were as little as €2.76 million.

Despite the significant increase in Morocco’s watermelon sales to the EU, the report indicates Mauritania sold the “most watermelon” to the EU in April.

The country’s watermelon sales to the EU reached 18.57 million kilograms.

Costa Rica comes second, while Morocco ranked third, followed by  Senegal and Panama.

The continued increase in production and sales of watermelon, which is one of the water-consuming crops, comes amid pledges from the government to step up efforts to address drought-related challenges.

Morocco’s government frequently stressed that it is working on the implementation of a series of actions to address water stress, including plans to use  “conventional” water resources by constructing more reservoirs.
