Rabat – Amid a scorching heat wave, Morocco and Algeria have recorded some of the highest temperatures in all of Africa. Both countries experienced sweltering conditions with temperatures reaching dangerous highs in several cities.

According to the weather monitoring website OgiMet, all of the top 15 hottest cities in Africa were found in Algeria and Morocco today, while the coolest temperatures were found in the south of the continent.

Benni Mellal, a city in central Morocco, topped Moroccan cities in the list with a staggering 47.5°C. This extreme heat was closely followed by Oujda, a city in northeastern Morocco, where the temperature reached 46.8°C. The third Moroccan city feeling the heat was Marrakech at 46.6°C, a popular tourist destination known for its vibrant markets and historic palaces.

Over in Algeria, in many cities, the situation was even more intense. Biskra, located in the northeast region of the country, recorded a temperature of 48.0°C – considered one of the highest ever recorded in the country. The desert city of Adrar faced soaring temperatures of 47.9°C, while In-Salah, nestled deep within the Sahara desert, endured an incredible 47.8°C.

These record-breaking temperatures have raised alarm over public health concerns and urged local governments to take measures to keep residents safe amidst such harsh weather conditions.

As global climate change continues to cause more extreme weather events, it is crucial for North African nations like Morocco and Algeria to continue monitoring these intense heat waves and implement measures to mitigate their impact on local communities.

This wave of record-breaking temperatures across Morocco and Algeria are part of a dramatic increase in extreme weather events worldwide. As such incidents become more common due to climate change, it is imperative for countries worldwide to take appropriate measures to prepare for and adapt to these new environmental changes
