Rabat – Malaysia has appointed Khalid Assari as Honorary Consul to Casablanca, indicates a press release from the country’s embassy in Rabat.
The press release described Assari as a “well-respected member of the business community in Morocco” with “deep knowledge of the region,” making him a perfect fit for the role in which he will provide services to Moroccan citizens and businesspeople regarding Malaysia.
The press release adds that Assari’s knowledge on the region will also prove “invaluable” in providing assistance to Malaysian companies hoping to establish themselves in the North African country.
“The Honorary Consul will, among other things, work to promote cultural and economic ties between Malaysia and Morocco, building on the strong historical and cultural connections between the two countries,” the embassy added.
Assari completed his baccalaureate from the Royal Military High School in Kenitra in 1981, after which he pursued his studies in the United States, obtaining an MBA in Virginia in 1987.
After graduating, he joined a family industrial company in Casablanca. From 2002 to 2015, he served in charge of managing several semi-public establishments in the industry and real estate sectors.
Malaysia and Morocco established diplomatic relations in 1963, with the South East Asian country establishing its embassy in Rabat in 1966.
The embassy was initially a Charge d’Affaires office before being upgraded to the ambassadorial level in 1989. Morocco established its embassy in Kuala Lumpur in 1988.
Cooperation in all areas has increased between the two countries in recent years, with trade especially growing steadily, albeit “with room to improve,” the embassy’s press release pointed out.
Malaysia mainly exports electrical equipment, rubber products, and palm oil to Morocco, while Morocco’s main exports to Kuala Lumpur include phosphates, fertilizers, and textiles.
