Rabat – In the wake of a police officer’s fatal shooting and killing of a 17-year-old Algerian teenager in Nanterre, France, the country continues to grapple with a wave of protests and unrest, marking the fourth consecutive night of violence and chaos.
The situation escalated significantly overnight, resulting in a staggering number of arrests and various instances of violence and destruction across various cities. During the night from Friday to Saturday, a total of 1,311 individuals were arrested nationwide, according to the French Ministry of Interior.
The ministry also reported that 79 police officers and gendarmes were injured during the clashes, noting that these numbers are provisional.
The scale of the arrests and injuries reflects the magnitude of the ongoing crisis and the anger and frustration felt by citizens following the teen’s tragic death.
The extent of the damage caused by the protests is alarming, as shocking videos have emerged capturing instances of violence and destruction. The ministry’s statement revealed that 1,350 vehicles were set on fire, while 234 buildings were either burned or vandalized.
Meanwhile, a staggering count of 2,560 fires were reported on public thoroughfares.

The ministry further documented 31 attacks on police stations, 16 attacks on municipal police stations, and 11 attacks on gendarmerie barracks.
To tackle the escalating situation, the French government had already deployed 45,000 police officers and gendarmes across the country. But despite these efforts and repeated appeals for calm, the protests have continued to grow in size and intensity, leading to the unprecedented number of arrests and incidents.
The clashes and violence witnessed on the streets of French cities are a reflection of the deep-seated frustrations and grievances felt by a significant portion of the population following the tragic death of the young man, which was caught on video.
In addition, it brought to the forefront long-standing issues of social and racial inequality within the country, as well as police brutality.
