Rabat – In a historic moment for Moroccan athletics, Fatima Gardadi clinched this morning the bronze medal in the women’s marathon at the 2023 World Championships in Athletics in Budapest.
The 31-year-old runner’s remarkable performance marks the first time a Moroccan woman has graced the podium in the fiercely competitive event.
Facing off against a field of world-class athletes, Gardadi showcased her determination and prowess over the 42.195-kilometer distance. With an official time of 2 hours, 25 minutes, and 17 seconds, she crossed the finish line behind Ethiopia’s Amane Beriso Shankule, who claimed the gold with a time of 2:24:23, and her compatriot Gotytom Gebreslase, who secured the silver with a time of 2:24:34.
Gardadi’s journey to the podium was one of perseverance and strategy. This marked only her third marathon and her first outside of Morocco’s borders. The seasoned runner navigated the challenging course at Heroes’ Square with precision, managing her race admirably despite her limited experience at this distance.
Maintaining a presence within the leading group until the final ten kilometers, Gardadi displayed remarkable composure even as she began to lose ground on the frontrunners.
As the race reached its critical juncture, she found herself in sixth place, trailing Amane Beriso Shankule by 25 seconds at the 35th-kilometer mark. However, Gardadi’s spirit remained unbreakable, and she kept a steady pace that ultimately propelled her to the bronze medal.

A pivotal moment in the race occurred when Gardadi overtook Yalemzerf Yehualaw less than two kilometers from the finish line, solidifying her place on the podium. Her well-timed surge showcased her strength and strategic acumen, leaving spectators in awe of her performance.

Gardadi thus offers Morocco its second medal, after Soufiane EL Bakkali crowned in the 3000m steeplechase.
