Rabat – Morocco’s women football national team have achieved their biggest rise in the FIFA latest rankings, moving up 14 places thanks to their qualification for the round of 16 at the 2023 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand which ended on August 20.
As the Confederation of African Football (CAF) noted on its website, the Moroccan team has moved up 14 places by ranking 58th worldwide, up from 72nd. In Africa, meanwhile, the Atlas Lionesses are ranked fourth, behind Nigeria, South Africa, and Cameroon.
The national team was eliminated in the Round of 16 of the 2023 World Cup after suffering a 4-0 defeat by France.
Despite opening the group stage with an overwhelming 6-0 loss to Germany, Morocco managed to recover in their remaining two games, securing impressive 1-0 wins against South Korea and Colombia to finish second in Group H with 6 points.
The top 10 African nations in the latest FIFA rankings are Nigeria in 32nd place worldwide, South Africa ranked 45th worldwide, Cameroun placed 56th in the world, Morocco (58th), Ghana (59th), Ivory Coast (66th), Zambia (69th), Tunisia (76th), Equatorial Guinea (79th), and Algeria (80th).
Following Morocco’s exit from the Women’s World Cup, FIFA President Gianni Infantino commended the Moroccan Atlas Lionesses’ historic performances during their first-ever participation in the global tournament.
“Congratulations to Morocco for its memorable debut at the FIFA Women’s World Cup,” the FIFA chief wrote on Instagram. “The Moroccan team’s journey to the round of 16 has proven that they have a place at the highest level.”
Upon their return from the World Cup, the Moroccan women’s football team was warmly welcomed at the Mohammed V Airport in Casablanca by a Moroccan delegation from the Royal Football Federation and the president of the FRMF Fouzi Lekjaa.
At the airport’s exit, a large group of supporters also gathered to enthusiastically greet the Atlas Lionesses.
