Rabat – Olga Carmona, the Spanish women’s football team captain, received on August 20 the tragic news of her father’s death right after clinching the first ever world cup title against England, according to the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF).

Expressing condolences to the player, the federation wrote, “We send our most sincere embrace to Olga and her family in a moment of deep sorrow. We love you, Olga, you are the history of Spanish football.”

Carmona scored the winning goal for Spain in the 29th minute, clinching the first title for her country.

On her official X account, Carmona shared a post addressing the passing of her father.

“I know you have been watching me tonight and that you are proud of me,” she said. “Rest in peace dad.”

“I know that you have given me the strength to achieve something unique,” she added.

According to Spanish news outlet Relevo, her mother and brothers joined her in Australia on Saturday. They opted not to notify her about the sad news so that she could concentrate on the final.

Real Madrid, her team, also sent their “condolences and affection to Olga, her family, and all of her loved ones.”

Olga Carmona has become the youngest player to score in the semi-finals and then in the final of the same World Cup, since American star Alex Morgan in 2011.
