Rabat – Assiya Zouhair, the second goalkeeper of the Moroccan Women’s National Football Team, received a warm welcome in the Yaacoub El Mansour neighborhood in Rabat, celebrating the Atlas Lionesses’ journey at the 2023 Women’s World Cup.

The local community came alive on Friday to recognize the Moroccan team’s performance, a testament to the close-knit bonds that the local community shares with their sporting heroes.

The team, who reached the round of 16 in the tournament, displayed outstanding skill and determination, garnering international attention and instilling immense pride within the Moroccan community.

Videos circulating on social media platforms showcased the heartwarming scenes as Zouhair returned to her hometown. She was greeted by an enthusiastic crowd of neighbors, family members, and friends.

The community’s warmth was notable as they embraced their Zouhair and gifted her flowers.

In addition, traditional Moroccan music filled the air, adding a vibrant rhythm to the reception.

The Atlas Lionesses’ journey to the round of 16 of the tournament was a historic achievement, particularly considering that they were the sole and the first-ever representative from the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region in the tournament.

In addition, the ongoing tournament marked the Moroccan national team’s World Cup debut.

The Atlas Lionesses returned to Morocco on Thursday, where they received a hero’s welcome at a reception organized by the Moroccan Royal Federation of Football (FMRF).

During the reception, FRMF President Fouzi Lekjaa delivered an address during which he promised the Moroccan women’s team to develop women’s football in the country.

“Following a few days of rest, we will work on programs to continue the advancement of women’s football. This will involve a comprehensive transformation in the training of younger age groups, specifically those under the age of 15, 16, and 17,” Lekjaa pledged.
