Stuttgart – Three French police officers have been charged with “armed violence unintentionally causing death” over the demise of a 27-year-old man during the widespread riots that swept through France earlier this summer.
The victim, identified as Mohamed Bendriss, tragically lost his life in the southern city of Marseille, where tensions escalated following the police killing of a teenager at a routine traffic stop.
The incident unfolded against the backdrop of nationwide protests ignited by the teenager’s death, with concerns about police violence and abuse of power taking center stage. Bendriss’s demise now stands as the solitary fatality attributed to the explosive outpouring of public anger and frustration.
On the fateful day in question, Bendriss was reportedly pursued by police on his scooter, suspected of involvement in looting a store. The situation rapidly escalated, culminating in the firing of a blast ball, a projectile commonly utilized by law enforcement for crowd control. The impact of the projectile left discernible marks on Bendriss’s chest, consistent with the injuries caused by such a device, according to official autopsy findings.
Authorities have deemed it “probable” that Bendriss’s untimely demise resulted from the forceful impact of the projectile on his thorax. Despite initially attempting to evade his pursuers on his scooter, Bendriss eventually succumbed to cardio-respiratory arrest, leading to his tragic passing.
The three charged officers now find themselves facing legal proceedings for their involvement in this alarming incident.
As a notable departure from convention, the accused officers have been prohibited from any contact with the plaintiffs in the case, as well as participation in any police activities related to urban riot control or large-scale events. Such a comprehensive set of restrictions underscores the gravity of the charges and the potential implications for policing practices.

Bendriss, a married father and expectant father-to-be, has become a symbol of the complex and fraught relationship between law enforcement and the public. The unprecedented criminal case against the police officers involved reflects a growing demand for accountability and transparency in the face of allegations of excessive force and misconduct.
This incident is emblematic of broader tensions between the French police and the communities they serve. The recent history of clashes and controversies has underscored the urgent need for reforms within law enforcement agencies. As the investigation unfolds, it remains to be seen how this landmark case will shape the ongoing discourse surrounding police accountability and the quest for justice.
