Rabat – A grim wave of drownings has swept over Algeria, with a staggering 41 lives lost to drowning in just a week, from July 28 to August 3. These tragic incidents have sparked concerns over water safety and prompted urgent calls for stricter regulations and awareness campaigns in the North African country.
The Algerian Civil Protection has reported statistics revealing that last Thursday alone, 12 individuals lost their lives in drowning incidents, with 10 of these occurring at beaches. This spike in drownings has raised alarm bells, prompting authorities to open investigations into the root causes of this unfortunate surge.
Since the start of the summer season, Algeria has witnessed a distressing total of 69 drownings. Officials from the Algerian Civil Protection have attributed this rise in drowning incidents to multiple factors, with swimming in prohibited and inadequately monitored beach areas ranking as a primary factor. Additionally, the practice of swimming in water complexes, often without proper safety precautions, has also played a role in these tragedies.
The Algerian Civil Protection has urged citizens and tourists alike to adhere to beach guidelines, choose designated swimming areas, and prioritize their safety while enjoying the waters.
Families and communities across Algeria are grappling with grief, and it is hoped that a collective effort towards safer practices will help prevent further heart-wrenching losses in the coming weeks.
