Rabat – A high seas patrol by Morocco’s Royal Navy successfully intercepted and rescued 194 individuals attempting irregular migration on August 5, MAP, the Moroccan news agency, reported earlier today.
The operation took place in the waters under national jurisdiction in the southern region of the kingdom, near Guerguerat. The Royal Navy’s response helped avert a potential tragedy as the migrants were found in a pirogue facing distress.
According to a military source, the migrants had embarked on their journey from a country located to the south of the kingdom.
The group, composed entirely of Senegalese nationals, included men, women, and children seeking better prospects. Sadly, the treacherous voyage claimed the lives of five individuals, underscoring the dangers of irregular migration. Additionally, eleven migrants were found in critical health conditions and needed immediate medical attention.
The rescued migrants were then transported aboard a Royal Navy vessel to the port of Dakhla. The group of migrants were subsequently handed over to the Royal Gendarmerie for standard administrative procedures.

This incident underscores the ongoing struggle against irregular migration and the need for comprehensive strategies to address its root causes.
