Rabat – Munir El Mohamedi, the Moroccan national team’s goalkeeper, will not take part in Morocco’s training camp scheduled for September due to a shoulder injury.
Saudi Arabian club AL Wehda, where El Mohamedi plays, issued on Monday a medical report saying that the Moroccan keeper is suffering from a shoulder tendon injury and is currently in Qatar, where he is undergoing a specific recovery program at Aspetar, Doha’s state-of-the-art hospital complex.
The report highlighted that El Mohamedi will only return to the pitch after the FIFA competitions in September.
As such, El Mohamedi is unlikely to play at Grand Agadir Stadium for the final day of the CAN 2023 qualifiers against Liberia on September 9, nor for the friendly against Burkina Faso scheduled on September 12 in the French city Lens.
Given that only current starter Yassine Bounou is available for these two upcoming games, Moroccan national coach Walid Regragui will have to try out other goalkeepers.
Morocco’s match against Liberia will take place at Grand Agadir Stadium at 8:00 p.m. GMT+1, while the second game against Burkina Faso will be held on September 12 at the Bollaert-Delelis Stadium in the French city of Lens at 7:30 p.m. Moroccan Time.
Morocco has already qualified for the final phase of the pan-African tournament. The Moroccan national team will know its opponents after the draw for the group phase, which will take place on October 12 in Ivory Coast’s capital city Abidjan.
El Mohamedi was one second in the Atlas Lions’ pecking order for goalkeepers during Morocco’s incredible run in last year’s world cup in Qatar. As the starter Yassine Bounou was unavailable in the Atlas Lions second group stage match against Belgium, he was replaced by El Mohamedi who showcased great performance with a clean sheet.
