Rabat – Morocco’s international football player, Nayef Aguerd has reflected on his remarkable participation in the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar and how his mother played a pivotal role in shaping the man he is today.
In an interview with CNN, Aguerd said of his mother: “For me, she’s a superwoman. For me, she did everything, she did everything.”
Of his early life, Aguerd stressed that while he did not grow up in a wealthy family, his mother made sure to provide him with the fundamentals. played an important role in motivating him to excel.
She was always there and played an important role in motivating him to excel, he said, recalling her as always telling him: “ Don’t say you’re poor, because you only think about money. But we’re not poor, you’re healthy and you’re smart and you can study, and you’re in good condition, you have three meals a day, why would you say you’re poor?”
The Moroccan player also commented on the celebrations Morocco’s Atlas Lions had with their mothers on the field after the Portugal match at the World Cup. “It wasn’t something we planned before the competition,” he said.
“When you’re at school – I’ll give an example – when you go to school… and you get good exam results, you pass a test or something, the first person you’ll tell – I’m a man, you won’t go tell your father – you’ll go tell your mother. That’s normal. It’s the same in football.”
He continued: “So, we won the first match, and you see your mother watching the match, of course, you’re going to be like a kid, you want to dance with her and you want to tell her, ‘I’m very happy, we succeeded.’ That’s all there is. Now, when I talk to my mom, she’s always wondering, ‘When is the next competition?’ She’s already thinking about other competitions.”
Speaking about his aspirations in life Aguerd said: “Many players have goals. I’m not talking about awards or clubs, I’m talking about personal goals. For me, personally, my goal is to make my mom proud, since I was little, and I won’t stop. I’m 27 years old, and even if I reach 35, my goal is to make her proud. And when I stop playing football and decide to do something else, it will always be the same until my last breath.”
