Rabat – As the new school season is around the corner, preparations for the new academic season have already started and parents have noticed yet another increase in foreign textbook prices.
French school books increased up to 20 DH in comparison to last year, while British and American textbooks suffered a rise from at least 5 to 10 DH.
As for Moroccan books, according to some libraries in the area, prices remain the same.
As the cost of education continues to rise, parents find themselves grappling with the financial burden of providing their children with necessary educational means.
Maryam is a mom of two and has also been struggling with school supplies and textbook prices.
“I try to go to different libraries and malls to lighten up my load (…) Some parents even choose to go to further cities just to get less expensive school supplies,” she told Morocco World News (MWN). “It’s a whole organization, although it shouldn’t be.”
Parents have also been creating online groups in order to organize joint purchases for school supplies, giving them the possibility of buying huge amounts of textbooks, sheets of papers and even school bags at reasonable prices.
Some suppliers even offer up to 15% discounts on some textbooks.
Another way for parents to compensate for these rises is book exchanges.
Parents of ex-students have been selling older textbooks to other parents, a cost saving method that’ll not only benefit the parents, but also the environment by extending the life cycle of books that would have been thrown away otherwise.
