Rabat – The latest edition of the Times Higher Education World University Rankings for 2024 featured a total of 11 Moroccan universities.
Sidi Mohammed Ben Abdellah University of Fez secured the top spot within the country, ranking between 1001-1200 globally. The university has once again demonstrated its academic standing on the global stage.
Following closely are Hassan II University of Casablanca, Ibn Tofail University of Kenitra, Cadi Ayyad University of Marrakech, and Mohammed V University in Rabat, all falling within the 1201-1500 range, respectively.
Meanwhile, the +1501 range featured Abdelmalek Essaadi University, Chouaib Doukkali University, and Hassan I University.
This year’s rankings saw the inclusion of three new Moroccan universities—Mohammed I University, Moulay Ismail University, and Sultan Moulay Slimane University—each securing positions within the +1501 range.
The ranking assessed a total of 1,904 universities from 108 countries and regions, compared to 1,799 universities last year.
The report indicated that the methodology for the 2024 rankings has been enhanced for greater accuracy and detail, encompassing 18 performance indicators across teaching, research, knowledge transfer, and international outlook.

Although Moroccan universities scored slightly below the global average, the report highlighted a notable upward trend in research indicators over time. A key strength for Moroccan universities lies in the ratio of doctoral degrees to faculty members.
Phil Baty, Chief Global Affairs Officer at Times Higher Education, acknowledged the fierce competition among universities and commended Morocco’s consistent standing.
“Despite Moroccan universities maintaining the same positions in the rankings, this remains a significant achievement considering the fierce competition among Arab universities and on a global scale,” Baty said.
He expressed optimism about the potential for more Moroccan universities to feature in the ranking.
“With three more universities entering the rankings this year, we hope that the next year will see more Moroccan universities providing data for them to be ranked in the world’s most reliable, accurate, and comprehensive university ranking,” Baty underlined.
Globally, the UK’s Oxford University secured the top position in the ranking, followed by Stanford University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the United States.
