Rabat – US Ambassador to Morocco Duke Buchan reaffirmed the US’ firm commitment to continue supporting Morocco’s position on Western Sahara, focusing on peace and regional stability.
Buchan made his remarks in an Instagram post, commenting on Morocco’s decision to name the Tiznit-Dakhla Expressway after President Donald Trump.
“The President Donald J. Trump Highway stands as a powerful monument to the visionary leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI,” the US Embassy quoted Buchan as saying.
Buchan also described King Mohammed VI as a true partner for peace, reaffirming Trump’s unwavering resolve to stand with Morocco for a “Moroccan Sahara defined by peace, regional stability, and prosperity for generations to come.”
On Sunday, the US president wrote a post on Truth Social, thanking King Mohammed VI for Morocco’s decision to name the expressway after him.
“I look forward to traveling the full length of this magnificent expressway one day, and hope it will be soon,” Trump said, referring to the 1,055-kilometer highway Morocco launched as part of its major infrastructure reforms.
The message comes as Morocco and the US continue to pledge their commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation at all levels.
The US made a milestone declaration in 2020 when Trump recognized Morocco’s sovereignty over its southern provinces in Western Sahara, recalling that Morocco was the first country to recognize the United States in 1777.
Since then, the US has repeatedly reaffirmed its support for Morocco’s position and reiterated it at the UN Security Council, which acknowledged the viability of the Moroccan Autonomy Plan and declared it a genuine political process to end the dispute over Western Sahara.
The US also continues to reinforce this position, urging all parties to the dispute to use the autonomy plan as the only reference and basis for negotiations seeking to pave the way for an end to the dispute.
Trump’s announcement on the expressway on Sunday was accompanied by a three-minute video highlighting the centuries-old strategic partnership between Morocco and the United States and emphasizing Washington’s continued support for Morocco, particularly the growing US backing for Morocco’s sovereignty over its southern provinces in Western Sahara.
On Monday, the US Embassy said that the country’s Department of State is marking 237 years of advancing American diplomacy around the world.
“As we celebrate this milestone, we also recognize one of the Department’s longest and proudest partnerships, with the Kingdom of Morocco, America’s oldest friend,” the embassy wrote.
The embassy also emphasized the importance of bilateral ties between the two countries, recalling the Treaty of Peace and Friendship signed between them in 1786. The embassy emphasized that this treaty continues to strengthen cooperation, mutual respect, and shared prosperity nearly 250 years later.
