Rabat – King Mohammed VI has given the children orphaned by the devastating Al Haouz earthquake the status of the “Ward of the Nation,” committing to provide care and assistance to the children who have suffered the loss of their families due to the recent disaster.

“Ward of the nation” is a term used to describe individuals, often minors, who are placed under the care, protection, and responsibility of the government or state, often after they lose their family due to war or a natural disaster.

When someone is designated as a “ward of the nation,” it implies that the government has taken on a role similar to that of a legal guardian, ensuring the individual’s welfare, safety, and overall well-being.

The monarch announced the decision in a meeting held on Thursday at the Royal Palace in Rabat with the presence of government officials, including Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch.

With this proclamation, the King aims to ensure that the orphaned children receive the highest level of the nation’s support and be protected from any potential risks they may face in the aftermath of the earthquake.

The Moroccan government is aiming to safeguard and nurture the children, offering them a sense of belonging and security during this challenging period and beyond.

The decision comes as part of a strategy that aims to address the needs of the most vulnerable communities affected by the tragic earthquake.

This includes the activation of the emergency program for the resettlement of earthquake-stricken communities.

The program was devised by a special inter-ministerial committee with the aim of addressing the substantial damage caused to nearly 50,000 residences, either fully or partially destroyed, across the five provinces affected by the earthquake.

A key aspect of this plan focuses on providing temporary emergency shelters for the affected population, specially designed to endure the upcoming cold weather and adverse conditions.
