Rabat – In the wake of the magnitude 7 earthquake that hit several regions in Morocco on Friday night, Israel has extended an offer for aid to the North African country.
The Israeli government’s Arabic account on X, formerly known as Twitter, made the announcement while reporting Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s condolences to the victims.
“Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has expressed the Israeli government and people’s sympathy with the Moroccan people during this tragedy,” the post said, adding that Netanyahu also expressed his “sincerest condolences” to the families who fell victim to the quake.
“The Prime Minister has delegated to all specialized forces in Israel to be on standby to head to Morocco and extend a helping hand to the local forces in rescuing those who are stuck and administering aid to survivors,” the post noted.
The Israeli government also added that the Ministry of Defense and the Israeli army are on standby to offer help through their specialized rescue forces.
In addition to Netanyahu, Israeli Ambassador to Morocco David Govrin and Foreign Minister Eli Cohen both expressed their condolences to the North African country.
On Friday night, many across Morocco felt a strong magnitude 7 earthquake, leading families and whole neighborhoods to evacuate their homes in anticipation of aftershocks.
According to the latest official figures, 820 people have lost their lives, with 672 sustaining injuries, 205 of whom have grave injuries. The human casualties have been concentrated in the provinces of Al Haouz and Taroudant, with Chichaoua and Ouarzazate also suffering some heavy casualties.
The number is expected to rise as rescue efforts continue.
