Rabat – Moroccan athlete Soufiane El Bakkali has earned yet another accolade, winning the gold medal in the 3,000 meter steeplechase in the Wanda Diamond League, currently held in Xiamen, China.
The win is El Bakkali’s fourth in the competition, as he recorded a time of 8 minutes, 10 seconds, and 31 milliseconds, cruising to victory.
Ethiopia’s Samuel Firewu came in second with a time of 8 minutes, 11 seconds, and 29 milliseconds.
He was followed in third place by Kenyan Amos Serem, who clocked in at 8 minutes, 14 seconds, and 41 milliseconds.
This latest victory comes after the Moroccan athlete won a gold medal in the 2023 World Athletics Championship held in Budapest a little over a week ago, adding to a growing list of international accolades.
The Fez-born runner has made a name for himself in the past couple of years, earning various accolades and dominating the 3,000 meter steeplechase in multiple competitions.
His first major honor was in 2017 when he won the silver medal at the World Championships in London. The next year, he won a gold in the Mediterranean Games in Spain and another Silver in the African Championship in Asaba, Nigeria.
In 2019, El Bakkali won two bronze medals at the African Games held in Rabat and the World Championships held in Doha, Qatar.
He burst onto the world scene in 2021, winning a gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics. The Moroccan has since become the dominant force in the 3,000 meter steeplechase world , winning a gold medal in both the 2022 and 2023 World Championships.
In 2022, he was shortlisted for the World Athletics Male Athlete of the Year Award.
