Marrakech – As the world’s leading experiential travel show, PURE, commenced in the enchanting city of Marrakech, it became evident that this event had a lower participation due to the earthquake catastrophic that hit Morocco recently.
Usually, welcoming 1,700 delegates from 60 different countries, the event was poised to showcase the very best of global travel experiences. However, the excitement was tinged with sorrow as large numbers of participants decided to cancel their plans to attend the event due to the recent devastating earthquake.
The reasons for the cancellations were diverse, ranging from concerns about the readiness to fly due to recent events, to a sense of inappropriateness given the circumstances that have stricken Morocco, and particularly Marrakech.
The somber atmosphere in the city deepened when King Mohammed VI declared three days of mourning for the tragedy. Most of the death and destruction occurred outside the city limits of Marrakech, but the city’s resilience shone through.
In the face of adversity, Marrakech has swiftly begun the process of returning to normalcy. Hotels, coffee shops, and businesses reopened their doors, demonstrating the unwavering spirit of the city.
Serge Dive, President of PURE event, shared his thoughts, “There are still some people in shock, but there’s also a sense of confidence among tourists and a willingness to return to Morocco.”
Marrakech’s emergency personnel worked tirelessly to aid those affected by the recent events. Fortunately, many of the city’s five-star hotels are equipped with earthquake-resistant structures, ensuring the safety of the delegates in Marrakech.
Dive went on to express his frustration with media coverage, noting that it often focused solely on the destruction of buildings and failed to acknowledge the resilience of the Marrakech people.
In reality, the majority of Marrakech’s residents had resumed their daily lives, and were eager to protect their livelihoods, particularly the tourism industry.
Unlike the more remote mountainous areas affected by recent events, Marrakech’s reconstruction efforts were in full swing and progressing swiftly.
Visitors to the city not only have the opportunity to enjoy a memorable holiday but also contribute to the community’s recovery.
As Marrakech bounces back from the tragedy, it stands as a testament to the city’s unwavering spirit, its resilience in the face of challenges, and the determination of its people to rebuild their lives and their beloved city.
