Rabat – New Zealand has announced a $1 million contribution to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) to assist in the ongoing rescue operations to help people affected by the devastating earthquake that struck Morocco last week on Friday.
“The IFRC is working with the Moroccan Red Crescent to deliver essential relief items such as food, tents, and blankets, and to provide lifesaving medical assistance, psychological support and protection for the most in need,” a statement from New Zealand’s government said on Thursday.
Several countries and agencies have made similar contributions, including Australia which also announced $1 million of aid for the earthquake victims.
On Wednesday, USAID also announced an initial $1 million support contribution, while renewing its determination to provide help for Morocco’s recovery.
The earthquake has killed over 2,940 people, while at least 5,500 people have been left injured.
Morocco’s armed forces, security services, auxiliary forces, and civil protection are all intending to speed up the rescue operations, with the help of NGOs, and international rescue teams from Spain, the UK, and Qatar.
