Rabat – Morocco’s central bank, Bank Al-Maghrib, has donated MAD 1 billion (over $97 million) to the special fund tackling the devastating damage caused by the deadly earthquake that hit Morocco on September 8.

The bank announced the news on Thursday, stressing that its contribution is part of the high instructions King Mohammed VI released as part of Morocco’s measures to tackle the earthquake repercussions.

Various governmental and non government institutions have been announcing donations dedicated to helping the fund manage the crisis.

King Mohammed VI, through the royal company Al Mada, also donated MAD 1 billion to the special fund.

The donation came just a few hours after he chaired a meeting to discuss the project for victims’ resettlement.

As part of the project, affected households will receive MAD 30,000 in emergency aid, followed by MAD 80,000 for those who had their homes partially collapse, and MAD 140,000 for those who had their homes completely collapse.

The earthquake has left over 2,900 people dead with over 5,500 people injured.

Efforts assisting the emergency response to tackle the earthquake crisis are ongoing with rescue teams deployed in the regions affected by the quake.

Moroccan volunteers and NGOs have also been tirelessly joining efforts seeking to manage the crisis and extend help for people affected by the quake.

Official rescue teams and volunteers have been distributing food, tents, and medicines, as well as other basic necessities.
