Rabat – London, Ontario’s Muslim community has come together in a show of solidarity to provide much-needed relief for the victims of the recent earthquake in Morocco and the devastating floods in Libya.
Approximately 300 individuals gathered at the DoubleTree by Hilton for a fundraising event organized by Islamic Relief Canada on Friday night.
According to CTV News, the event proved to be a success, with organizers expecting to raise more than $150,000 for the relief efforts.
The funds raised will be directed towards providing critical aid, including food supplies, emergency shelters, and essential items such as mattresses and blankets to those affected by the natural disasters.
Yasmin Alameddine, one of the key organizers of the event, spoke about the importance of this humanitarian effort, emphasizing the dire circumstances faced by the victims in Morocco and Libya.
“If you put yourself in their shoes, you lost your house, you lost your family, you lost everything that you ever loved, and everything that you know,” she said.
She continued, “You can’t imagine where to get your next meal, where to sleep. So these simple things that they don’t know where it’s coming from, we want to be able to give them at least that.”
The earthquake in Morocco has destroyed tens of thousands of houses, with the death toll nearing 3,000.
The government is deliberating on a reconstruction program to rehabilitate affected areas.
In Libya, at least 11,300 people have died and another 10,100 are reported missing. Ahmed Zouiten, a WHO representative in Libya said that the flood is a “disaster of epic proportions.”
