Rabat – Morocco’s Minister Delegate for Digital Transition and Administrative Reform Ghita Mezzour revealed that the country plans to establish a dedicated system for artificial intelligence (AI), with the goal of driving innovation and promoting growth.
Mezzour made the statement today during the national conference on “The Use and Development of Responsible Artificial Intelligence in Morocco,” which was organized in collaboration with the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
During the event, Mezzour highlighted the need for a specialized AI system to generate new services, employment opportunities, and skill development.
In addition, she lauded Morocco’s efforts in embracing AI ethics and adhering to UNESCO’s recommendations on the subject.
The minister said that the country has taken significant strides to harness the potential of AI, evident in the establishment of research and development centers dedicated to it in several cities, including Oujda, Rabat, Fes, and Benguerir.
Acknowledging the power of AI, Mezzour said that her ministry is actively working to help various sectors benefit from the ongoing technological revolution, particularly in areas such as startups and service outsourcing.
However, she stressed the importance of addressing AI’s ethical aspects to develop an effective policy framework.
Speaking at the event, the Regional Director of UNESCO for the Maghreb, Eric Falt, commended Morocco’s leadership in AI ethics.
He noted UNESCO’s strong commitment to addressing ethical challenges in the rapidly evolving AI landscape and supporting member states in implementing the Recommendation on AI Ethics, unanimously approved in November 2021.
The two-day event explored various themes, including the opportunities and challenges of AI in the country, and its impact on the population, the economy, and the infrastructure.
