Rabat – Money transfer company Western Union announced today it is enabling customers worldwide to contribute directly to Morocco’s special earthquake fund without typical transfer costs.
Following the tragic earthquake that hit the Al Haouz region, the Moroccan government established a special fund, numbered 126, to support the affected communities and aid relief efforts.
“Consumers around the world can now donate directly into this fund using Western Union’s money transfer services,” said the company in a press release.
Initially announced on September 13, Western Union’s zero-transfer-fee offering applies to donations sent to the special fund and regular money transfers to bank accounts for those sending funds to their families in Morocco.
Individuals using Western Union’s services across its global network, including both digital platforms and retail locations, can benefit from this fee exemption until October 11.
Head of Africa at Western Union Mohamed Touhami el Ouazzani emphasized the importance of supporting Morocco’s recovery and relief efforts following the earthquake.
“As the country moves forward, all of us – people and organizations combined – must continue doing whatever is within our means to support,” he said, acknowledging the swift pace at which recovery and relief efforts are being undertaken.

El Ouazzani stressed that “Western Union stands in solidarity with the people of Morocco,” highlighting the company’s initiative to facilitate donations directly to the government’s special fund.
“We know that consumers globally would like to donate towards supporting victims and the relief process. We hope that being able to use Western Union’s vast global network, alongside our zero transfer fee offer, will enable them to do just that,” he concluded.
The tragic earthquake that hit central Morocco on September 8 caused massive destruction and claimed the lives of nearly 3,000 people.
The Moroccan government has activated an emergency program to rehabilitate and rebuild homes and public infrastructure affected by the earthquake. The funding for these reconstruction projects will be sourced from the special fund.
