Rabat – In the wake of the devastating earthquake that struck Morocco’s Al-Haouz region last Friday, the money transfer company Western Union announced offering zero transfer fees for individuals sending financial aid to their loved ones in Morocco.

The earthquake, which shook the Al-Haouz region and its surrounding areas, left a trail of destruction, and close to 3,000 human casualties.

In a statement issued on Friday, the company said that the initiative to waive transfer fees “aims to ease the financial burden on those affected by the earthquake.”

The free-tall service is available for both cash payouts at Western Union Agent locations and direct bank transfers.

Consumers can utilize this fee waiver until midnight, 12 a.m. Central European Summer Time (CEST), on 19 September for cash payouts, and until midnight, 12 a.m. CEST, on October 11 for bank transfers.

The relief measure applies to money sent to Morocco from Western Union’s global network, including digital channels and retail locations.

Mohamed Touhami el Ouazzani, Head of Africa at Western Union, expressed his condolences and support for Morocco.

“We are deeply saddened by the tragic consequences of the earthquake that devastated the Al-Haouz region and surrounding areas of Morocco on Friday,” he said.

“As the country comes together in rescue efforts and the rebuild process begins, we hope that enabling zero transfer fees for consumers sending money home to their loved ones can help contribute and support.”

As Morocco continues to mobilize its army and other personnel to tackle the heart-wrenching aftermath of the earthquake, Western Union stands in solidarity with the people of Morocco,” he said, concluding: “Our thoughts are with everyone that has been impacted.”

Rescue efforts continue in remote villages as the country faces a bigger challenge: reconstructing the demolished zones and housing the hundreds who are now left without a shelter.
