Rabat – Morocco’s Central Bank Governor Abdellatif Jouahri received an award from the Global Finance Magazine on Saturday.
Jouahri is the only Arab central banker to feature on “Central Banker Report Cards 2023,” a ranking that includes the world’s top central bank governors. He received a rating of “A-.”
He received the award on the sidelines of the World Bank and International Monetary Fund’s Annual Meetings held in Marrakech this year.
Published annually by Global Finance since 1994, the Central Banker Report Cards grade the central bank governors of 101 key countries in the European Union, the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank, the Bank of Central African States and the Central Bank of West African States.
Grades are based on a scale from A to F for success in inflation control, economic growth goals, currency stability, and interest rate management. An “A” represents an excellent performance down through an “F” for outright failure.
“Fighting inflation, which has been fueled by pent-up demand and disrupted supply chains, has everyone turning to their central bankers for help,” said Global Finance founder and editorial director Joseph Giarraputo.
“Global Finance’s annual Central Banker Report Cards celebrate those bank governors whose strategies outperformed their peers through originality, creativity, and tenacity,” he added.
Jouahri became governor of Bank Al-Maghrib (BAM) in 2003 and has since implemented numerous strategies to safeguard Morocco’s economic stability, with a strong focus on maintaining stable prices and managing inflation.
His achievements have become especially evident in recent times, as Morocco successfully navigated various global economic challenges, including the repercussions of the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
In the 2022 rankings, Jouahri further cemented his reputation as a central banker, ranking among the top 20 central bank governors worldwide, a distinction achieved by only three African central bankers.
