Moroccan police in Casablanca seized over 1 tonne of cocaine concealed in a frozen fish shipment on Thursday.
A statement from the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) said that police are investigating the case saying that security services received an alert from the owners of units distributing imported fish in Casablanca after discovering quantities of a white substance suspected to be cocaine.
Preliminary investigations found that the shipment concerns a large quantity of frozen fish imported through Spain from the original country in Latin America.
“This shipment contains quantities of this hard drug,” the statement added.
Search and investigation operations at several locations and warehouses based in Casablanca enabled police to seize 1.37 tonnes of cocaine.
DGSN opened an investigation in accordance with international security cooperation channels to uncover details on the shipment, as well as its origin and routes of infiltration into Morocco.
Last year, Moroccan police seized over 190 kilograms of cocaine as part of the crackdown on drug trafficking in Morocco, according to the 2022 DGSN annual report.
The number represents a decline of 87% in the quantity seized compared to a year earlier.
In 2022, police also seized over 98,500 tonnes of cannabis.
