Casablanca – FIFA has assigned veteran English referee Anthony Taylor to officiate the highly anticipated match between Spain and Portugal, scheduled for Monday, as part of the round of 16 of the World Cup.
The 45-year-old referee has a distinguished refereeing career, having officiated Premier League matches since 2010, and received his international badge in 2013.
He is considered one of the elite referees of both UEFA and FIFA. German referee Felix Zwayer has also been appointed as the fourth official for the match
This marks Taylor’s sixth match officiating for the Spanish national team, with “La Roja” having achieved three wins and two losses under his whistle.
The English referee’s name is associated with a number of exciting and controversial encounters in the modern history of the Spanish national team.
Euro 2024 semi-final: The last match he officiated for Spain was against Germany, it was a fiercely contested battle from the German side. It ended with the Spaniards winning 2-1 after extra time. The match witnessed a strong tackle by Toni Kroos on Pedri, which caused the Barcelona star to be injured and out of action for the remainder of the tournament.
