Rabat – Morocco’s security services dismantled a drug trafficking attempt on Saturday evening, seizing 74,804 psychotropic tablets as well as nearly 2 kilograms of cocaine at the Ceuta border crossing point.
A joint border control operation led to the arrest of a Moroccan citizen upon his arrival from the Spanish enclave of Ceuta in a foreign-registered vehicle.
A statement from the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) said that a judicial investigation was opened to determine the origin and trafficking routes of the shipments as well as to identify any and all accomplices.
The operation is part of the reinforcement of border control mechanisms and efforts to combat drug and psychotropic trafficking.
Cocaine and psychotropic pills are among the most consumed and trafficked drugs in Morocco, motivating authorities to intensify their efforts to tackle drug trafficking across the country.
In October, Minister of Interior Abdelouafi Laftit shared statistics on drug trafficking crackdowns, saying that security services counted over 156,500 cases related to drug possession, consumption, and trafficking from January 2022 to July 31, 2023.
During the same period, police arrested over 200,000 people for their alleged involvement in similar cases.
During the same period, 5,841 cases related to drug possession, consumption, and trafficking were recorded in Moroccan rural areas, leading to the arrest of 7,037 suspects.
Morocco has also been especially targeting the trafficking of L’Poufa, a dangerous substance that has become prevalent among Moroccan youth.
According to Lafftit, nearly 400 cases related to l’Poufa drug have been recorded in Morocco between January 2020 and August 2023.
Security services managed to seize four kilograms of the same drug within this period.
