Rabat – Wydad AC lost the African Football League final today against their South African counterparts Mamelodi Sundowns 3-2 on aggregate.
The second leg of the final, which took place today at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria on Sunday, ended with a 2-0 result in favor of Sundowns.
Sundowns striker Peter Shalulile scored the first goal in the first half’s stoppage time, tying the aggregate score at 2-2.
In the 53rd minute, midfielder Aubrey Modiba scored a second goal for Sundowns, thanks to an error from Wydad’s defense, solidifying his team’s position in the lead.
In the first leg on November 5, Wydad had beaten Sundowns 2-1 at the Mohammed VI Stadium in Casablanca.
Sundowns defender Rivaldo Coetzee opened the scoring for Wydad with an own goal in the 41st minute.
Sundowns center-back Abdelmounaim Boutouil then managed to tie the score in the 74th minute from a penalty kick, but Wydad sealed the victory with a powerful shot from Anas Serrhat in the 78th minute.
This year marks the first edition of the African Football League, which is set to become Africa’s newest club competition, in addition to the Champions League and Confederation Cup.
