Rabat – Morocco’s Minister for Equipment and Water, Nizar Baraka, confirmed during a press conference today the adoption of measures to rationalize water consumption, based on the water situation in each region.
In light of the challenging water issue the country is currently facing, Baraka stressed that Morocco wastes a significant amount of water every year, despite approved awareness initiatives.
He explained that the regional committees headed by workers and governors, who are responsible for monitoring the water situation on a daily basis, will take all possible measures to rationalize the demand for water in order to utilize the existing resources as long as possible.

Baraka recommended that water flows be reduced and turned off for a certain period of time, stressing that these measures will be implemented locally, depending on the water situation of each city or municipality.
The government official attested to the fact that Morocco has to modify its water strategy and give it new dynamism, as a result of the catastrophic drought Morocco has experienced in recent months.
During a high-level meeting held on the sidelines of the COP28 conference earlier this month, Baraka referred to Morocco’s severe drought and said that it requires an adaptation of the country’s water policy.
According to him, this can be done by expanding the number of seawater desalination projects and resorting to the use of renewable energies.
The minister explained during the conference that the goal of Morocco’s water desalination program is to reach 1.5 billion cubic meters by 2030.
