Rabat – The sequel to “Lord of War,” starring superstar Nicolas Cage will start filming in 2024 in Morocco.
Entertainment-focused magazine Variety shared the exclusive news on Sunday, saying that Karim Debbagh’s leading line producer Kasbah Films secured “a raft of U.S. and U.K. projects that will lens in Morocco, including ‘Lords of War,’ the Sequel to ‘Lord of War,’ starring Nicolas Cage as the world’s most notorious arms dealer.”
The crew will feature between 400 to 500 members, of which 100 people from the US and UK.
Debbagh also touted the assets and capabilities of crew members operating in Morocco thanks to the training they received in recent years during “all the big movies that have come here to film and also the great schools that have opened and helped bolster this younger generation.”
Debbagh also stressed the country’s diversity, allowing filmmakers and producers to capture diverse scenes reminiscent of different international locations.
“We’re trying to cover four or five African countries, such as Libya, Egypt, Senegal and Mali, and several countries in the Middle East, and we’ve almost found everything in Morocco,” Debbagh said.
The filming of the sequel will start in March and is set to last for 40 days.
The producer touted Morocco’s cinema assets, stressing that Casablanca itself is “diverse,” adding “that you find areas that look like Senegal and others that are very luxurious like a California neighborhood, and if you’re looking for places that look similar to Libya, Yemen or Syria, you can find them in and around Marrakech.”
Debbagh emphasized the benefit of filming the sequel in Morocco, stressing that it is positive for the country’s local economy.
The magazine said that the filming of the sequel in Morocco is expected to bring €7 million of eligible expenses.
It will also secure a “rebate of roughly €2 million — which means there will be only €8 million left for all other international productions shooting in the country.”
Morocco, in particular, Ouarzazate and its nearby regions, have been home to several movies and show productions.
International crews have also started filming the stunt sequences for the highly anticipated film “Gladiator 2” in Morocco.
The Mummy and Lawrence of Arabia are two other notable productions that took place in Ouarzazate.
