Rabat – Abdellatif Hammouchi, Morocco’s Director General of National Security and Territorial Surveillance (DGSN-DGST), held two working sessions with France’s Director-General of Internal Security Nicolas Lerner, who is currently on a working visit to the North African country.

The meetings took place during Thursday evening and Friday morning, and the officials evaluated cooperation between the two in the fields of intelligence and security.

A statement from the DGST added that they also discussed security issues of common interest to the two countries.

Hammouchi and Lerner agreed to promote security and intelligence cooperation, and to expand the scope of assistance and cooperation to include expertise exchanges.

The visit is part of Morocco’s commitment to strengthen security cooperation, to be a serious and reliable partner in protecting both regional and international security.

Earlier this week, Hammouchi met the general director of French national police Frederic Veaux to similarly discuss security cooperation between their two countries.

The meeting took place in Morocco, with Veaux having been on a working visit to Morocco to stress security cooperation and convey France’s willingness to boost cooperation with Rabat.

The talks centered around Veaux requesting Morocco’s security assistance for the Paris 2024 Olympic games, as well as the urgency of strengthening cooperation to tackle challenges such as drug trafficking, irregular migration, terrorism, and cybercrimes.

Morocco has assisted other countries in the security field, including assisting Qatar during the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

The Gulf country had expressed interest in benefiting from Morocco’s expertise in the field of security prior to the tournament’s start.

On December 11, Romanian President Klaus Werner Johannis awarded the prestigious National Order “The Star of Romania,” with the rank of Grand Officer, to Morocco’s foreign intelligence agency, the General Directorate of Studies and Documentation (DGED), for its efforts in protecting regional security.
