Rabat – Senegal’s National Assembly President, Amadou Mame Diop, reiterated his country’s unwavering support for Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara. The declaration came during discussions in Dakar with the President of Morocco’s Chamber of Representatives, Rachid Talbi El Alami, who led a substantial parliamentary delegation on a working visit to Senegal.

The two leaders emphasized a shared perspective on international issues of mutual interest, underlining the deepening ties between Senegal and Morocco. President Diop commended the leadership role played by King Mohammed VI in strengthening bilateral relations, expressing profound gratitude for the monarch’s commitment to the development of ties.

President Talbi El Alami, noting the warm reception extended by Senegalese deputies to the Moroccan parliamentary delegation, emphasized the historic and fraternal bonds uniting the two peoples.

Addressing the national cause, Talbi El Alami praised Senegal’s consistent support for the Moroccan identity of the Sahara, emphasizing the enduring nature of this relationship.

Senegal-Morocco: A ‘unique’ bond

During the 9th edition of the Dakar International Forum on Peace and Security in Africa on November 27, Senegal’s President Macky Sall emphasized the historical significance of “the unique, ancient, and consolidating relationship with Morocco.”

He recognized Morocco as Senegal’s primary economic partner on the African continent and praised the pivotal role of diplomats in nurturing the bond.

Senegal, often referred to as the “Country of Teranga,” is Morocco’s leading client in West Africa, absorbing over 21% of the Kingdom’s exports. Commercial flows between the two nations have witnessed significant growth, with an annual increase of 18.5% over the past two decades.

Beyond economic collaboration, the historical connection between the two countries extends to Morocco’s support for Senegal’s entry into the United Nations in 1960—a partnership that transcends time.
