Rabat- Morocco welcomes the International Court of Justice (ICJ) decision, stipulating immediate provisional measures for the State of Israel. A source from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccans Residing Abroad confirmed this stance.
In accordance with the consistent emphasis by King Mohammed VI, President of the Al-Quds Committee, the recent decision by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) resonates with the need for practical and urgent measures. The focus is on safeguarding Palestinians, halting the unparalleled aggression faced by the Gaza Strip, and addressing the hazardous deterioration of the ensuing humanitarian crisis.
The interim ruling issued by the court has mandated six provisional measures. Among them, Israel is directed to take all necessary steps to prevent genocidal acts, to prevent and punish direct and public incitement to genocide, and to promptly and effectively ensure the provision of humanitarian assistance to civilians in Gaza.
The same source also reiterated Morocco’s principled stance, affirming support for the justness of the Palestinian cause. It condemns the targeting of civilians by any party and remains committed to the legitimate right of the Palestinian people to establish their independent state with East Jerusalem as its capital.
This commitment is within the framework of the internationally endorsed two-state solution, serving the aspirations of the people in the region and the international community for a secure regional future marked by peace and stability.
At the conclusion of the court hearing on Friday, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ordered Israel to implement measures preventing acts of genocide in the Gaza Strip. Israel is required to provide a report of evidence of its preventive measures to the ICJ within one month regarding its compliance with the order.
The court compels Israel to implement additional measures to protect Palestinians, however, it does not issue an order for Israel to cease the war on civilians in the Palestinian enclave.
ICJ orders do not have their own enforcement mechanisms however, and the degree to which Israel will be held accountable to comply with the court order depends on the members of the UN Security Council.
Since October 7, a devastating war on Gaza has led to the loss of about 26,000 Palestinian lives, with 64,110 individuals sustaining injuries and an overwhelming 85% of the population forced to leave their homes.
