Rabat – An online petition was launched on January 17, calling for the suspension of planned demolitions in the touristic town of Imsouane, scheduled to begin in the next 24 hours.
Initiated by “concerned local businesses and citizens,” the petition seeks to address demolition works that would “erase a significant part of the characteristic charm of Imsouane,” the text of the petition reads.
In addition, the petition warns against the loss of livelihood as the demolition is set to extend to a number of small businesses.
“These are people whose lives are intertwined with the very fabric of Imsouane – their homes and businesses form an integral part of what makes this town special,” the petition text explains.
“Many locals depend on tourism for their income – an industry that thrives on the unique appeal that places like old-town Imsouane offer,” the petition text adds.
A separate GoFundMe account was equally set up to raise donations for the affected population.
Local populations say that they were given 24 hours to evict their properties which they say have been family homes for over three generations.
Reports indicate that the demolition of the town is paving the way for a mega tourism development project. Morocco World News was not able to verify the accuracy of these reports.
Moroccan social media users have decried the demolition of the small town, sharing pictures and videos of people transporting their belongings, and other shared videos of demolition work.
On social media users shared a video of the aftermath of the demolition in a Facebook post with the caption: “Goodbye Imsouane, Goodbye paradise of surfers.”
