Rabat – Moroccan law enforcement, in close coordination with Spanish security services, successfully thwarted an international drug trafficking operation, seizing a staggering 1,488 kilograms of cocaine at the Tanger-Med Port.
This joint effort on January 2nd by the judicial police in Tanger prefecture, in collaboration with the National Security services at the Tanger-Med Port, demonstrates the efficacy of international cooperation in combating transborder organized crime.
The operation, conducted as part of joint operational cooperation between Moroccan and Spanish security services, targeted international cocaine trafficking networks, aiming to neutralize the threats posed by organized crime.
The General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) confirmed this high-impact operation that involved intercepting a substantial quantity of cocaine, totaling 1,277 bricks, concealed within a container aboard a maritime transport vessel flying the flag of a European state.
The shipment originated from a South American port and was en route to a Turkish port, highlighting the extensive reach of the criminal network.
Simultaneously, judicial police are actively investigating the case under the supervision of the competent prosecutor, aiming to identify all individuals involved in the criminal network and ascertain its regional and international connections.
A day earlier, on January 1st, Moroccan authorities intercepted another significant shipment of 362.95 kilograms of cocaine, part of an operation jointly executed by National Security and Customs at the El Guergarate border crossing, south of Dakhla.

Furthermore, in the year 2023, there was a notable surge in collaboration between the National Police and National Surveillance in criminal intelligence, border control, and on-the-ground coordination with customs services at various border crossings.
This strategic partnership led to the handling of an impressive 99,513 cases and resulted in the apprehension of 130,212 individuals involved in criminal activities.
Among the substantial seizures were 81.175 tons of hashish, showcasing a 17% decrease, alongside 1,922 tons of cocaine, 6.88 kilograms of heroin, 1,223,774 ecstasy tablets, and various other psychotropic substances.
These accomplishments highlight the commitment of Moroccan law enforcement in curbing drug-related crimes and the success of collaborative efforts with international partners, particularly with Spanish security forces, in safeguarding the region from the threats posed by organized crime and drug trafficking.
These successful operations align seamlessly with the ongoing efforts of the DGSN as they implement the provisions of the 2022-2026 anti-crime strategy.
Focused on strengthening structures to combat delinquency, develop forensic and technical police laboratories, and intensify modern investigative mechanisms, the DGSN remains committed to incorporating human rights dimensions into its police functions.
