Rabat – As part of the first group stage match of the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), that is being held in Cote d’Ivoire, Algeria will face its Angolan opponent today.
The two teams will convene at the Peace Buake stadium at 9:00 p.m. Moroccan Time, and the game can be watched on UK’s Sky Sports Premier League.
Having been disqualified from the group stage in the last AFCON, Algeria will be looking for a comeback, learning from previous mistakes and to secure a spot in the knock-out stage this year.
In a recent interview with the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Algerian head coach Djamel Belmadi said that he is aware that “there are a lot of big teams. Because we went out in the first round in Cameroon, we can’t say we are the favorites for this competition.”
Nevertheless, “we can say we’ve prepared ourselves to give our best and to perform in this competition and to go as far as possible,” Belmadi stressed.
The Algerian team holds two trophies: winning the competition in 1990 and in 2019, when they showcased outstanding performances throughout the competition, most notably against Senegal in the final.
For Angola, this year’s edition marks their 9th appearance, with its most recent campaign in 2019, when they were sent out of the group stage.
Two performance highlights for Angola were reaching the semi-finals of the tournament both in 2008 and 2010.
This is the second time that Algeria and Angola will be facing each other in AFCON. Their last game was in the 2010 tournament’s group stages, which resulted in a goalless draw, CAF reported.
